Fish Oil Supplements... What are They?

Fish oil is a dietary source of Omega 3 fatty acids. Our bodies need Omega 3 fatty acids for a variety of functions, including muscle activity and cell growth. People typically take fish oil supplements for their anti-inflammatory effects.

Omega 3 fatty acids come from food, and in the form of a supplement, as they cannot be created within the body. Fish oil contains two omega 3s called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and is an excellent source of omega 3s.

Both EPA and DHA are found in cold water fish such as salmon, trout, and mackerel. They are also found in shellfish such as mussels, oysters, and crabs. Additionally, some nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils contain another omega-3, known as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children over the age of 2 consume at least two servings of fatty fish per week.

In addition, flaxseed oil contains high omega-3 fatty acids, but it is not the recommended form for children diagnosed with ADHD.

    Does Omega-3 Help ADHD Symptoms?

According to Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD), fish oil supplements are not FDA-approved, however, there is evidence that suggests fish oil can help in reducing symptoms of ADHD, such as inattention and impulsivity.

Fish oil supplements rich in Omega 3 fatty acids are important nutrients for brain health. It is thought that Omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in the brain and improve the balance of neurotransmitters, which are vital chemicals that help the brain cells communicate with each other. Fish oil supplements might also help improve blood flow to the brain, which are also seen to benefit cognitive functioning.

A review of 16 studies suggests that omega-3 fatty acids improved memory, attention, learning, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, all common symptoms seen in children with ADHD.

However, more research is required to understand better the effects of fish oil supplements on children with ADHD. These supplements should not be used as a substitute for evidenced-based treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and ADHD medications.

Is Fish Oil Safe for Kids?

Fish oil supplements can take the form of a capsule, a liquid, and tablets. They can be taken orally, or applied topically onto the skin.

So, is fish oil safe for kids? According to the Mayo Clinic, the evidence on this topic is mixed. Taking a fish oil supplement seems to have little benefit on cognitive abilities and school performance in children, however, there is evidence that it can benefit children with ADHD.

In addition, few side effects are associated with taking a fish oil supplement. These side effects include a fishy aftertaste, bad breath, indigestion, nausea, loose stools, and potential for rashes. Taking fish oil in high doses can also increase a person's risk of bleeding. However, the risk of taking this supplement is relatively low and experts indicate that it is generally safe to take.

Like mentioned previously, it is important to consult with your child's doctor to discuss the risks and benefits of supplementing fish oil as part of your child's regimen.
